Couples accommodation in the Charente-Maritime department of the Poitou-Charentes region
La Hune self catering apartment
Property Description
ILE D'Oleron is connected to the mainland by a 3km bridge and anually records more sunshine hours than the Med - that's official. Thanks to its clean air, mild climate, and of course, it's celebrated OYSTERS!,the island remains a magnet for those seeking its restorative powers or to those who are simply in tune with nature.
From the dunes accessed from our back garden gate you will enjoy extensive views over the Atlantic and Les Huttes beach below with excellent bathing, surfing and snorkeling or at any number of other locations along miles of sandy beaches that ring the island. Shellfish gathering, known as 'peche au pied' is right at the foot of our dune or you can cast your line for seabass.

On Oleron the cyclist is King! With over 33kms of safe off road cycle trails criss-crossing the island passing sea, forests, quaint holyhock adorned villages & historic points of interest variety is never a problem. We include cycles free of charge in our rental - a saving of more than £50pp on local weekly hire charges.
OLERON 'just en face de NEW YORK'. The locals will tell you that the island of Oleron lies (as the seagull flies) just over 4000kms from the island of Manhatten - starting just the other side of our garden gate.
Local area
There is an excellent street market from where you can buy everything from your morning croissants to fish fresh from the day's catch. Hypermarkets and major shopping are only a 10 minute drive away at St Pierre, the island'tiny capital.
Every village has its own daily street market and every coastal village its own little port incorporating shops and restaurants around its marina. Hire boats are available for fishing or sightseeing trips to some of the neighbouring islands always passing the famous Fort Boyard on their circuit. Inland, often criss-crossed by canals you will discover salt basins sometimes still mined in the traditional ways with donkeys and numerous independant oyster farms where you can stop and buy or just sample with a glass or two of local wine.
Life on the island tends to be low key. It has a kind of barefoot, beachcomber informality but you would be wrong to translate that as 'roughing it'. Oleron is also home to thousands of Parisian second home owners and that means good food, fashionable shops and lots of creature comfort.
Outside of the French community Oleron is relatively unknown but the actor Johnny Depp was recently spotted holidaying secretly on our neighbouring island of ILE DE RE just off La Rochelle - so can it be long?
