Property Description

Self catering apartment for two people in the Charente Maritime. The apartment is on the first floor of an old Merchant's house dating from 1776 (the date can be seen above the front door).
This spacious 1st floor apartment with superb views of the River Charente and the island opposite,
is part of an 18th Century town house situated on the quay of the picturesque town of Saint Savinien.

Accommodation details

The large bedroom (double and single beds) separates the bathroom ( bath, shower etc) from the larger living/dining area ( there is a screened-off kitchen which includes a gas cooker, fridge, kettle, toaster,microwave and cafetiere). the large double bedroom is located at the back of the house
.
A door to the right of the bedroom leads to the small entrance hall, off which, is the bathroom which has a bath/shower, wash hand basin and toilet.

Books and games are provided, as well as a T.V., DVD, video player with films and CDs to choose from and a hi-fi system.

The apartment is a non-smoking area and is unfortunately not suitable for pets.

Local area

Shops and Restaurants are within walking distance with a weekly market and a Wine Fair in August. Parking on the quayside in front of the house. N.B. The front door opens directly onto the quay so care should be taken on leaving and entering the premises.
As we front onto the river there is no garden but we provide folding chairs which can be used on the quayside for "an aperitif" or taken to the island opposite where there are also picnic tables, a creperie, an ice cream kiosk and a restaurant.
Saint Savinien is an excellent base for trips to the coast or inland towards Cognac country. On the island ( 2 minutes walk) there is a restaurant, a creperie/ice-cream kiosk, an open-air (heated) swimming pool (June to September), tennis courts, crazy golf, a minature boating lake and a vast picnic area with a boules court. Bicycles are available for hire in the town and there are riding stables 10 minutes drive away.
There is a Supermarket 2 minutes drive away

Other details

Facilities in the town include a small epicerie, a self service grocers and on the edge of the town a large Intermarche. As well as three bakeries, there is also a butchers shop, a charcuterie, a florists, an art gallery, two newsagents (with daily English papers), several estate agents,several garages, a wine store, two banks, a Post Office, a pizzeria, two bars, three restaurants and a cinema.
The town has an 13th/14th century church modelled on Buckfast Abbey and a Museum of Patrimoine (next door to the apartment) which is open on Saturday mornings for visits. The Tourist board is at the end of the quay near the bridge and English is spoken there

April and October         -   185 euros

May 5th to July 7th
August 25th to Sept 29th  -  255 euros

July 7th to August 25th   -  340 euros

Reservations accepted from April to October (inclusive).
A Booking deposit of £30 sterling per week is required on booking.
This will be returned at the end of your say.
The TOTAL RENT IN EUROS to be paid on arrival.

Please note: the apartment is not available for rent from
 end of October to mid-April. The apartment is normally let from Saturday to Saturday with access between 15.00 hours and midnight, to be vacated by 10.30 hours on day of departure. However due to the increasing number of visitors flying to La Rochelle and hiring a car , we are prepared to take mid-week bookings provided they fit in with existing reservations. In all cases the minimum booking is 1 week.

Travel times & Directions

There is a train station with connections to la Rochelle and Saintes/Bordeaux twice a day. Car hire is available in Saintes , Rochefort and La Rochelle airport ( 50 minutes).
Car Hire or the Use of a Car is essential in order to explore this lovely part of France.

Angoulême, 1 Hour 30 mins
Bordeaux, 1 Hour 30 mins
Ferry/ Eurotunnel Calais, 8 Hours driving time
Nearest ferry port is St. Malo at 4 Hours
Nearest A10 Motorway Junction is junction 34 at St Jean d'Angely and Cognac - 15 minutes driving time. Full directions will be given when booking.
